Synopsis

A Hidden Legacy is a short documentary portrait of Mark Kemp, a self-taught fossil hunter from the Bransholme council estate in Hull, whose quiet determination has reshaped his life and sense of purpose. Set against the shifting, eroding landscapes of East Yorkshire’s Holderness Coast, the film follows Mark as he combs the beach at Cowden, an ever-changing shoreline where fragments of deep time are constantly being revealed and reclaimed by the sea. Through Mark’s reflective narration, we trace his journey from years spent in construction and engineering, to the moment he first discovered fossil hunting and became utterly absorbed by it. What began as an escape from work evolved into an all consuming passion, driven by patience, obsession, and an instinctive ability to see what others might miss: the smallest fossil tip hinting at something extraordinary beneath the surface. The documentary moves between the solitude of the coast and the intimacy of Mark’s home workshop, where time dissolves as he painstakingly prepares fossils by hand. His craft, learned out of necessity and persistence, becomes as meaningful as the hunt itself. As Mark explains, these fossils are more than objects, they are pieces of history destined to outlive him, preserved for future generations in museums and collections. When Mark makes the bold decision to leave his engineering job and turn his passion into a business, A Hidden Legacy captures both the risk and reward of choosing an unconventional path. From social media recognition to collaborations with museums, schools, and professional palaeontologists, Mark’s story reveals how dedication and self-belief can open unexpected doors. At its heart, A Hidden Legacy is not just about fossils, it’s a celebration of a man who found meaning in the margins of the coastline and, in doing so, carved out a legacy far deeper than he ever imagined.
